UF College of Pharmacy welcomes new associate director of the Center for Pharmacogenomics

Reginald Frye Jr., Ph.D., Pharm.D., has joined the University of Florida College of Pharmacy as the new associate director of the Center for Pharmacogenomics, where he plans to continue his research of drug metabolism and interactions.

Frye soon will begin clinical studies to investigate whether genetics could play a role in determining appropriate drug dosage for diabetes control. Frye theorizes that a patient’s genotype will establish how much medication is necessary for optimal results.

“Finding a relationship between genotype and dosage will improve results for patients and make it easier for doctors to prescribe the right dose for a patient, Frye said.

Frye also will continue his studies of the effects of St. John’s wort, a popular herbal supplement. He recently completed a study to investigate the interaction between the over-the-counter supplement and a highly effective prescription drug, Gleevec, used to treat leukemia.

An associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy since 1995, Frye also was a member of the Center for Clinical Pharmacology at the School of Medicine and the Center for Pharmacogenetics at the School of Pharmacy. He joins the UF College of Pharmacy as an associate professor of pharmacy practice.
