Title New and Emerging Viruses in Europe: How Can We Respond?

Presented by Wim H. M. Van der Poel, DVM Senior Scientist Centeral Veterinary Institute of Wageningen University and Research Centre The Netherlands

Refreshments will be served.

In recent years in Europe several large animal disease epidemics have occured. Two very important examples are Blue Tongue virus (BTV) in 2006 and Schmallenberg virus in 2011. Introductions of previously unkown viruses from a major threat to animal health and public health and continued changes in human and animal demography, coupled with environmental changes and chages within a virus itself make it likely that the trend for increased viral disease emergence will continue.

For better veterinary and public health protection with regard to emerging viruses, improved early laboratory detection, and improved monitoring and surveillance strategies are needed. Prompt detection and instigation of control measures such as vaccination are crucial to prevent spread. To achieve an optimal response to emerging viral disease outbreaks veterinary and public health institutes must work together and this should be actively supported by national authorities as well as international organisations like WHO, OIE and FAO.
