Title Promotion of Metabolic Health and Lifespan by Transiently Increasing Oxidative Stress
Presented by Michael Ristow, M.D. Full Professor of Nutrition, Institute of Nutrition, University of Jena, Germany Visiting Scienctist, German Institute for Human Nutrition, Potsdam-Rehbrcke Elected Member of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Advisory board of experts on Dietetic Products, Nutritioand Allergies
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The participants should be able to:
- Define and describe how abrogation of this mitochondrial ROS signal by antioxidant supplements impairs the lifespan-extending and health-promoting capabilities of flucose restriction, physical exercise, and impaired insulin/IGF1-signaling, respectively.
- Describe how RSO are essential signalling molecules which are required to promote health and longevity.
- Explain the concept of mitohormesis provides a common mechanistic denominator for the physiological effects of physical exercise, reduced calorie uptake, glucose restriction, and possibly beyond.
